Richard Osman

Richard Osman's second Thursday Murder Club mystery hands four retirees a stolen-diamond problem, a rising body count, and a villain who does not care how old anyone is. Funnier than the debut and considerably meaner, with a puzzle underneath the jokes that has been built with real care.

The Review

Our take

The sequel outruns the debut, and in cozy crime that almost never happens. Osman spent the first book assembling his quartet of retirement-village sleuths. Here he sets them loose on something with weight. An old colleague of Elizabeth's turns up at Cooper's Chase carrying a problem worth millions in stolen diamonds, and men who will kill to get them back. Within pages the village stops reading as a gag. Somebody in this story is willing to shoot a seventy-eight-year-old, and Osman makes sure you believe it.

Three plots run at once and none of them drop. There is the diamond mess, the murder that follows it, and a local drug operation that Ibrahim walks into at exactly the wrong moment. Osman braids them without letting a thread go slack, which is harder than his loose comic tone makes it look. Chapters run short, four or five pages most of the time, and nearly every one closes on a turn that pulls you into the next. The clues sit in plain view, most of them inside Joyce's diary entries, tucked between her notes on a rescue dog nobody else wanted. You read those entries for the comedy. Then the solution arrives and you understand that she filed the evidence in front of you, chapter after chapter, while you were laughing.

Realism takes a beating along the way. By the midpoint most of Cooper's Chase has turned improbably capable: Ron going undercover, Bogdan handling whatever the plot needs handled, Joyce steadier under fire than a trained operative. Anyone who loved the smaller scale of book one will notice the inflation. Osman plainly does not care, and the trade pays off, because that widened competence is what lets the last act swing as hard as it does.

Why you should read

Great if you like amateur sleuths with genuine cunning
Perfect for very English, low-gore whodunits
Good for readers who want comedy with real stakes
Ideal if the first Thursday Murder Club won you over

What to expect

Three interlocking cases across short, fast chapters
Jokes up front, actual menace running underneath
Diary entries that hide evidence in plain sight
A solution that plays fair with everything it planted

What anchors the whole performance is the aging material. Ibrahim's recovery after a violent afternoon in town is written without a shred of sentimentality, and the fear that follows it, of the world contracting to one room, sits under the comedy for the rest of the novel. Elizabeth's husband Stephen slips further into dementia across these pages, and their chess games turn into the saddest running scene in the book. Osman treats old age as an ongoing negotiation rather than a punchline, and he lets his characters lose ground in it. The final chapters settle a debt planted long before you registered that a debt existed. Setup honored, down to the detail you skimmed past on page forty.
