Richard Osman's second Thursday Murder Club mystery hands four retirees a stolen-diamond problem, a rising body count, and a villain who does not care how old anyone is. Funnier than the debut and considerably meaner, with a puzzle underneath the jokes that has been built with real care.
Why the audiobook wins
Lesley Manville takes over the Thursday Murder Club for the second book, and she is the reason many listeners prefer this series in audio. Four elderly amateur detectives require four distinct comic registers — Elizabeth's steel, Joyce's cheerful nosiness, Ron, Ibrahim — and Manville plays them as people rather than as types.
Osman writes on the joke and the ache at once, and Manville can hold both in a single line, which is harder than the books make it look. Just under twelve hours, in short chapters that suit commutes and dog walks.
One Audible credit gets the second case. Start with the first if you can, though Manville makes this one perfectly followable on its own.
