4.2/ 5 · Excellent

The French Illusion is John Grisham's CIA thriller, a Paris honeymoon kidnapping that draws in the FBI, French intelligence and a young lawyer recruited as bait. Fast, twisty crime fiction from a legal-thriller master on new ground, and the first book in a planned series.

The Review

Our take

Grisham leaves the courtroom, and the change of scenery does him good.

The French Illusion is a CIA thriller built on a honeymoon. Paul and Chelsea Tanner get the fairytale wedding, then the Paris trip, then a day excursion into the French countryside that ends with both of them kidnapped. Nothing in the opening hints at what's coming, which is the point. It starts warm and easy, until it doesn't. From there the book widens fast: this was not the first crime of its kind, and the FBI, the CIA and French intelligence are all circling the same puzzle without necessarily wanting the same answer. A young lawyer gets recruited as bait in an elaborate operation. A writer who made his name on trials handles the spycraft with the same easy command.

The suspicion machinery works. Twists arrive on schedule and, better, they turn the story instead of just jolting it, so you keep revising who you trust and what the agencies are really after. The prose stays brisk and a little dry, with flashes of wit that keep a grim story from going airless. And it is grim. The captivity scenes are graphic, and what the hostages endure is hard to sit through. Grisham doesn't soften it. He also doesn't hand you a clean hero. The CIA does its job, the captives do what they can, and the antagonist has a rationale that makes some readers hesitate before condemning him.

Then comes the last stretch. After a long, patient build of the operation and its complications, the finish moves with surprising speed and a lot of convenience. Tension that has been wound for most of 338 pages gets released in a hurry, and the payoff is smaller than the setup promised. The relationship at the center of the plot has a similar problem: the book says feelings are developing without really letting you watch them form. Grisham sets this up as the first in a series, yet the story wraps itself up well enough to stand alone, and that tidiness is the very thing that stings.

Why you should read

Longtime John Grisham readers curious about his spy turn
Twisty kidnapping thrillers with a CIA operation at the core
Fast, easy reads that finish in a few sittings
Crime stories that keep you doubting the agencies

What to expect

Graphic captivity scenes that are hard to read
Brisk pacing with dry humor running through it
Plot twists that redirect the case more than once
A fast, somewhat tidy final stretch

Most of The French Illusion is Grisham at full speed, outside the courtroom and plainly enjoying it. The ending is the only place it looks at its watch.
