The French Illusion Audiobook by John Grisham— narrated by Michael Beck
The French Illusion is John Grisham's CIA thriller, a Paris honeymoon kidnapping that draws in the FBI, French intelligence and a young lawyer recruited as bait. Fast, twisty crime fiction from a legal-thriller master on new ground, and the first book in a planned series.
Why the audiobook wins
Michael Beck narrates John Grisham's first CIA thriller. The prose is brisk and a little dry, with flashes of wit that keep a grim story from going airless. It starts warm and easy, with a wedding and a Paris honeymoon, and then a countryside outing ends in a kidnapping.
At about 12 hours, it works as a long weekend listen or a week of commutes. The twists turn the story instead of just jolting it, and the FBI, the CIA and French intelligence all want slightly different answers. The captivity scenes are graphic and hard to sit through, so be ready for that. The final stretch moves fast and ties up a little neatly.
One Audible credit covers the whole book, the first in a planned series.
