Our take

Faster-than-light travel in this universe runs on slugs. Not engines, not exotic drives: small, hungry, relentlessly affectionate creatures called taynix, who teleport by instinct and have to be talked into doing it on cue. So when Skyward Flight escorts a diplomatic team to a world sealed behind a belt of debris, and something down there starts cutting the pilots off from their slugs, they don't lose a convenience. They lose the road home. The book builds its entire middle out of that one hard rule, and it's the best thing in it.

The mission was supposed to be dull. The long war is over, humanity is free, and Arturo Mendez draws the postwar assignment nobody expects to need: fly cover for diplomats making contact with a human settlement that never learned the fighting stopped. Arturo is exactly the wrong person to hand an easy job. He spent years as second to a legend, he's the one everyone looks at now, and Patterson keeps circling the specific dread inside that. Not fear of dying. Fear of being the one whose call gets somebody else killed. Sadie carries the other half of the book, younger and louder and far better company than her earlier appearances ever suggested.

Worth being clear about the byline. Sanderson's name is on the cover and Patterson's work is on the page, the same arrangement that produced the Skyward Flight novellas, and her fingerprints are all over the character writing. She handles romance better than Sanderson ever has, which is real praise and also the source of the book's main problem: there is a lot of it, and for roughly the first third the flirting gets more runway than the mystery. Push through and the planet opens up. Runaway forests that have swallowed most of a continent. A settlement operating on rules nobody will explain. A ritual combat circuit whose winners are said to move on to something better. What's underneath all of it is a good reveal, and it reframes a piece of this universe's history instead of just adding a fresh monster.

A slow first third before the planet's mystery takes over
Dual POV plus interlude chapters narrated by the slugs
Substantial romance woven through the mission plot
Fast, accessible prose pitched at readers twelve and up

Then there are the interludes. Every so often a chapter goes to the taynix, and what could have been a gimmick becomes the sharpest device here: a species that experiences interstellar war as smells, snuggling, and a mild wish that everyone would please get along. It's very funny. It also makes the book's point about how differently two minds can hold the same event, without anybody standing up to deliver a speech about it. Blightfall never tries to be Spensa's story and takes care not to touch her ending. It clears room beside it, gives the controls to the people who were flying wing the whole time, and sets a much bigger question spinning for the two books still to come.
