The Review

Our take

Reading A World Appears feels like walking beside a sharp, curious companion who keeps revising what he thinks out loud. Michael Pollan lets you watch the opinions change. He starts with mushroom experiences that left him convinced plants have inner lives, then admits the belief thinned out once he was sober again. That's the right opening gesture for a book on consciousness: take the strange idea seriously, then see what's left of it in daylight.

The argument that emerges can be put in one sentence. Consciousness begins with living things keeping themselves stable, grows into feeling, and only later becomes thought and a sense of self, which makes the body the foundation and computation a late arrival. The evidence is a wide cast: plant neurobiologists, researchers trying to build feelings into AI, psychologists and novelists who try to catch the stream of experience in words. The feeling-before-computation step carries the most weight, and it pays off when the book turns to machines and explains why a system with no body gives him doubts. The plant material is more provocative than settled, but Pollan is good about pushing back on the experts he disagrees with instead of just stacking up views.

The prose is lucid and the science is organized well, which matters, because the subject is slippery and a lot of writing about it isn't. Memory and the self get their own attention, and the self, the book suggests, is the most mysterious thing consciousness produces. This is a thinking book rather than a light one, and some stretches ask for patience.

There are small irritations. Pollan leans into a folksy, "I'm only a guy asking questions" humility that sits oddly beside how much of himself is on the page. Nothing gets solved either, and a reader hoping for a final answer about how a brain produces a point of view will not get one. The materialist account is still short of an explanation, and the book is honest about that.

Why you should read

Pop science readers who like an author thinking on the page
Curious about plant sentience and machine minds
Interested in how feeling and the self arise
Want science and philosophy in one narrative

What to expect

A first-person journey that tracks the author's shifting views
Wide range of experts, from neuroscience to novelists
Dense in places, but clearly organized
Open questions rather than a final answer

What holds it together is the honesty. After five years of reading and conversation, Pollan ends up less certain than when he started, and he makes that feel like the real result of the work. The mystery stays open, but he leaves it better lit.
