The House on Mango Street
by Sandra Cisneros
Sandra Cisneros's The House on Mango Street is a coming-of-age novel told in short vignettes by Esperanza Cordero, a girl in Chicago who distrusts what her own name seems to promise and wants a house she can point to. Spare, spoken-sounding, and fast to read, it suits classrooms and book clubs alike.
