The House on Mango Street Audiobook— narrated by Sandra Cisneros
Sandra Cisneros's The House on Mango Street is a coming-of-age novel told in short vignettes by Esperanza Cordero, a girl in Chicago who distrusts what her own name seems to promise and wants a house she can point to. Spare, spoken-sounding, and fast to read, it suits classrooms and book clubs alike.
Why the audiobook wins
Sandra Cisneros reads her own book. Esperanza narrates in a voice that is direct, a little wry, and then suddenly close to poetry, and hearing the author give those lines their rhythm is the strongest reason to listen.
At a little over two hours, it is one of the shortest listens you will find. The book is built from vignettes of a few pages each, so you can hear a handful on one commute and a few more the next, or take it whole in an afternoon. The meaning sits below the surface, and it rewards a second pass.
One Audible credit covers the whole book.
