Raphael Montes built a cannibal farce out of a Rio rent hike, and The Secret Dinner is meaner and funnier than that premise has any right to be. Four broke students start cooking for the city's richest appetites, and Zoe Perry's translation keeps the Brazilian class satire sharp enough to cut. Horror readers will know within twenty pages whether they can stay.
Why the audiobook wins
Four narrators share The Secret Dinner: Andre Bellido, André Santana, Bernardo De Paula, and Robb Moreira. For a novel translated out of Brazilian Portuguese, a cast that handles the names and the Rio geography without flinching matters more than it usually would. Zoe Perry's translation keeps the class markers intact, and a good number of those markers are things you hear rather than read.
Audio also changes the arithmetic of the book itself. Dante narrates in the calm, reasonable voice of a man walking you through a business decision, and hearing that register out loud makes the drift much harder to ignore than it is in print. You catch the exact sentence where explaining turns into justifying. The dinner scenes are worse aloud. Treat that as a warning or a recommendation depending on your constitution.
Nine hours and forty-four minutes, one credit, and a book better taken in two or three long sittings than in commutes. Whatever else it manages, it will not be background listening.
