At nearly sixteen hours, the audio has room the two-hour Kubrick film never had, the ordinary kindling King spends chapters building: money worries, old violence, the specific ways Jack's mind starts arguing with itself before anything supernatural intrudes. If you know the movie, the book is a different, slower, more human kind of scary, and Scott's measured performance is built for exactly that pace.
