Why the audiobook wins

Sea of Tranquility runs under six hours, which makes it one of the few literary audiobooks you can finish inside a single travel day. The shape of the novel rewards exactly that. Mandel writes in short titled sections that jump between 1912, the 2200s, and a moon colony centuries after both, and hearing them in one sitting keeps all three timelines live in your head at once. Print readers commonly stall in the first fifty pages while the strands are still separate. In audio you are through that stretch before you have time to lose patience with it.

The recording uses a full cast rather than a single reader, which is the right call for a book built out of distinct voices: an exiled Englishman standing in a Canadian forest, a novelist grinding through the fourth city of a book tour, an investigator from a city with a painted sky. The handoffs mark the century changes for you, doing the job the section headings do on the page.

It is also a novel about a sound. A violin heard where no violin should be, and a mechanical roar underneath it that has no business existing yet. On paper you supply that noise yourself. Performed, it is closer to what Mandel appears to be after, and one Audible credit covers the whole thing.
