The Wedding People Audiobook by Alison Espach— narrated by Helen Laser

12 hr 13 min

Alison Espach's The Wedding People sends a woman at the end of her rope to a grand Newport hotel that has been booked out for somebody else's wedding, then turns the collision into a comedy about staying alive. Expect sharp dialogue, an unlikely friendship between the stray guest and the bride, and far more feeling than the setup admits to.

Why the audiobook wins

Helen Laser narrates The Wedding People, and this is a book that hands its narrator most of the work. Alison Espach wrote a novel that runs almost entirely on conversation, two women talking each other into and out of things across a long weekend, and comic timing on the page is only a suggestion until somebody performs it.

The opening is the test. Phoebe arrives at the hotel intending to end her life, and the humor starts almost immediately afterward. Played wrong, that combination curdles. Laser plays it straight, letting Phoebe's flat honesty be funny because she means every word of it, and the bride's frantic competence be funny because it is holding something up. The gap between the two voices carries scenes that are nothing but dialogue for pages at a stretch.

Twelve hours and change, one wedding weekend, one narrator doing all of it. One Audible credit covers the whole thing.
