Hatchet Audiobook by Gary Paulsen— narrated by Peter Coyote
Gary Paulsen's Hatchet is a Newbery Honor survival novel about thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson, the lone survivor of a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness with only a hatchet and his wits. It is fast, practical, and moving, and it works for middle-grade readers and adults alike.
Why the audiobook wins
Peter Coyote reads Hatchet, the story of thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson alone in the Canadian wilderness with a hatchet, a windbreaker and no map. The prose is clear and direct, and the survival is shown in believable detail, one clumsy first attempt at a time.
At about three and a half hours, it fits a car ride or a couple of evenings. The chapters are short and the pacing never sags, which makes it a natural fit for younger or reluctant readers, and it is just as satisfying for adults. The crash is tense, and the rest settles into a steadier, absorbing stretch.
One Audible credit covers the whole book.
