Charles Spencer

4.5/ 5 · Outstanding

Charles Spencer's memoir of his sister Diana is strongest on their shared childhood, from secret nicknames to a family split by divorce, and it ends with the week of her death. It is a brother's portrait rather than a full biography, warm and openly partial.

The Review

Our take

Call it a memoir of a childhood that happens to have a famous ending. Charles Spencer's case, put in one sentence, is that the woman the cameras followed began as a small girl with a private nickname, and that only her brother can say what that girl was like. The early pages carry the proof. As the youngest Spencers, he and Diana were Duch and Carlos to each other. They roamed the family estate, got through nannies who frightened them and boarding schools that were hard on both, and leaned on one another when their parents divorced and the household moved from Sandringham to Althorp. This is the largest share of the 381 pages, and the best of it.

The adult years get thinner treatment, and Spencer doesn't pretend otherwise. Diana's marriage to the Prince of Wales, her overnight turn into a global icon, and the press that hounded her are all here, but as anecdotes rather than a reconstruction. The Martin Bashir episode and the road to the Panorama interview get a real discussion. Her divorce from Charles gets none, and the controversy around the Paris crash is left alone. A reader hunting revelations will find a brother who keeps certain doors shut, whether from discretion or temperament. What fills the space is Spencer himself, particularly his own life after her death: the eulogy he wrote, the funeral preparations, the burial in Northamptonshire.

The construction is loose. The book doesn't run in order, there is no index, and no closing chapter steps back to weigh thirty years of hindsight, a missed chance, given the hindsight he has now. Photographs of the two growing up and a generous type size keep it easy going anyway. His account of the Prince of Wales is not neutral, and some will hear score-settling where others hear testimony. He is franker about Diana than a tribute needs to be: a few incidents of pushing and shoving hint at a harder side, and he offers his explanation while leaving the verdict with you.

Why you should read

Readers who want Diana through a sibling's eyes
Memoir fans who value voice over a tight timeline
Anyone curious about the Spencer family's childhood years
Those following the Bashir and Panorama story

What to expect

Mostly childhood, with fewer adult-era memories
Loose, non-chronological structure with no index
A frankly partial view of the Prince of Wales and the press
Easy reading, with photographs and large type

In Westminster Abbey in September 1997, he gave the world a public grief. Swan Song is the private version, with the nicknames left in, and the looseness suits it, since grief rarely arrives in chronological order. The prose is warm, the affection is plain, and the sister who emerges is someone you could actually picture sharing a nursery.
