Their Eyes Were Watching God Audiobook— narrated by Ruby Dee

Name: Their Eyes Were Watching God
Author: Zora Neale Hurston

6 hr 44 min

Their Eyes Were Watching God follows Janie Crawford through three marriages in Eatonville and the Florida Everglades, in a voice that mixes the speech of its characters with lyrical narration. Zora Neale Hurston's classic is a love story, a story of finding selfhood, and a book people reread.

Why the audiobook wins

Ruby Dee reads Their Eyes Were Watching God, a book you listen to as much as read. Hurston writes the dialogue in the vernacular of the South, rough, funny and quick, and sets it against narration that turns lyrical. Janie Crawford tells her own story to her friend Pheoby.

At nearly seven hours, it suits unhurried sessions over a week or a weekend. The opening asks for patience, and some readers find it slow, but the voices take hold a little way in. A hurricane crossing the Everglades is the big set piece, and the slow start pays off by the end.

One Audible credit covers the whole book.
