A. J. Finn's The Woman in the Window locks the reader into a Harlem brownstone with Anna Fox, an agoraphobic child psychologist who drinks through her prescriptions, watches old noir on a loop, and swears she saw the neighbor across the park murdered. Nobody believes her. Neither, for a long stretch, do you.
Why the audiobook wins
Ann Marie Lee narrates an agoraphobic film buff watching her neighbors from an upstairs window, and the performance has to carry a narrator whose account cannot be trusted — the wine, the medication, the old movies bleeding into what she claims to have seen. Lee plays it straight, so the reader does the doubting.
The book is built from very short chapters and old-Hollywood references, which gives the listening a stop-start rhythm that suits commutes. Just under fourteen hours, and the house's geography becomes surprisingly clear in the ear.
One Audible credit gets the whole thing. It is a good demonstration of why unreliable narration and audio suit each other: you only ever have her word for it.
