Ann Dowd, who plays Aunt Lydia on screen, reads Aunt Lydia here, and hearing that specific voice deliver Lydia's dry, vain, unrepentant confession is the single best argument for taking this one by ear. Bryce Dallas Howard, Mae Whitman, Tantoo Cardinal, and Derek Jacobi carry the other testimonies, and Margaret Atwood takes part herself. Three separate accounts written in three separate registers stop being a structural device and simply become three people talking.
If you are here from the Hulu series, the novel is where Aunt Lydia's backstory is set down in her own words, including what happened in the stadium and what she chose afterward. It reads faster than The Handmaid's Tale and moves like an escape story, which makes it unusually good company on a commute.
