Why the audiobook wins
Kathy narrates this entire novel out loud, in effect: digressive, correcting herself, circling back to a detail she forgot to mention, addressing someone she assumes already knows what a carer is. Rosalyn Landor reads it exactly that way, at conversational English pace, and what matters most is that she refuses to editorialize. The word completion goes by in the same tone as the weather. Ishiguro never points at his own euphemisms, and neither does she, so the horror arrives on your side of the headphones about ten pages after the sentence that caused it.
The 2010 film runs under two hours and has to state plainly what the book withholds for a third of its length. This recording keeps the withholding intact. If you have only seen the film, the novel's slow assembly of what Hailsham actually is has not been spoiled for you.
