Why the audiobook wins
The Monuments Men is a large cast of real people scattered across a collapsing Europe, curators and architects and art historians attached to advancing armies, and Jeremy Davidson keeps them straight. Edsel cuts between them constantly, and in print the roll call of names and units is the book's one real obstacle. Read aloud with distinct voices, it stops being one.
The suspense is also better heard than read. These men are chasing looted paintings into salt mines and castles while the war is still going, racing bombing runs and retreating SS units, and Davidson plays the near-misses without telling you which ones end badly.
