The Infinite State Audiobook by Richard Swan— narrated by Chris Rowe, Helen Keeley, and Nathaniel Priestley
Richard Swan opens The Decurion Saga with a galaxy-spanning fascist empire and a widow rich enough to try buying her way out of it. The Infinite State is dystopian science fiction with real political machinery under the hood, closer to a procedural about how oppression administers itself day to day than to a standard rebellion story.
Why the audiobook wins
Three narrators for three viewpoints. Chris Rowe, Helen Keeley, and Nathaniel Priestley split The Infinite State along the lines Richard Swan already drew, which is the obvious casting call and the correct one. The novel's whole argument rests on the same regime sounding different from a rich widow's chair than it does from a pilot's cockpit, and a single reader would have to fake that distance.
The party catechism is the thing audio does better than print. Who gives you life, who gives you purpose, who gives you joy, repeated by people who have said it ten thousand times before breakfast. On the page it becomes a refrain you start skimming by the third repetition. Spoken, it is liturgy, and the flatness of the delivery carries most of the horror.
Fifteen hours and change, which is long, and the middle stretch burns slowly on purpose rather than filling up with incident. One credit, and a series opener that closes with the real fight still ahead of it.
