The Hound of the Baskervilles (AmazonClassics Edition) Audiobook by Arthur Conan Doyle
A spectral hound stalks a cursed family across the fog-bound moor, and Sherlock Holmes must decide whether the killer is a legend or a man. Doyle's most atmospheric case, and arguably his best.
Why the audiobook wins
B.J. Harrison narrates classic fiction for a living, and his reading of Doyle's most atmospheric case leans hard into the fog — his Watson is credulous and game, his Holmes clipped and superior, and the moor itself gets a hush in his pacing that a silent page can't quite replicate. You can hear the howl coming before Watson does.
This is the Holmes story where Gothic dread outweighs pure deduction, which makes it unusually well suited to audio's slow-build suspense — the legend of the hound, the isolated hall, the footprints on the moor all land harder read aloud in the dark than skimmed in daylight. It's a strong pick for an evening walk or a rainy-night listen.
At under six hours, it's a brisk, atmospheric case that remains one of Doyle's best, and one Audible credit is a small toll for the moor, the curse, and that hound.
