The Five People You Meet in Heaven Audiobook— narrated by Mitch Albom

4 hr 38 min

Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven kills its hero on page one. Eddie, eighty-three, an amusement-park maintenance man, dies under a falling ride car and wakes to five people who explain what his life was actually for. A 214-page parable about regret, meaning, and the hope buried in an ordinary working life.

Why the audiobook wins

Mitch Albom reads The Five People You Meet in Heaven himself, in a little over four and a half hours. Author-narrated audiobooks are a gamble, and this one pays because the book was written in the register Albom actually speaks in: short declarative sentences, no ornament, a story told rather than performed. He is not acting the parts. He is telling you what happened to Eddie, and the plainness of that is the point.

The structure helps as well. Five encounters, each bracketed by a flashback to one of Eddie's birthdays, and Albom marks those shifts with pacing instead of effect. He slows into the birthday sections and reads the afterlife scenes straight, so you always know where you are without a chapter heading to check.

Four and a half hours is one afternoon, which is about the right dose for a book this concentrated. Take it in a single sitting if you can. The ending is better for not having a week of ordinary life between you and the opening chapter.
