William Peter Blatty's 1971 novel spends its first third on blood work, EEGs, and specialists, and that clinical patience is exactly why the horror lands. The Exorcist is a possession story built as a process of elimination, anchored by a Jesuit psychiatrist who has already lost his faith and has to certify a miracle anyway.
Why the audiobook wins
William Peter Blatty reads his own novel, which for a book this misremembered through its film is worth something on its own. Blatty wrote it as a serious book about faith and doubt, and hearing the author deliver the Karras sections makes that intent much harder to miss than the movie's reputation allows.
Eliana Shaskan handles the passages Blatty does not, and the split keeps the medical and clerical material distinct from the house itself. Nearly thirteen hours, and the slow procedural build — doctors, then psychiatrists, then priests — reads as investigation rather than spectacle.
One Audible credit gets the author's own reading of the novel that started it, and it is a markedly different experience from the film people expect.
