'Salem's Lot Audiobook by Stephen King— narrated by Ron McLarty and Joe Hill
Stephen King's second novel drops Dracula into 1970s rural Maine and lets him get to work. A writer comes home to Jerusalem's Lot to face the house on the hill, children begin vanishing, and the town's talent for minding its own business turns out to be the monster's best asset.
Why the audiobook wins
Ron McLarty narrates, with Joe Hill reading the framing sections — King's son on his father's second novel, which gives the bookends a weight no casting director could manufacture. McLarty handles the town itself: dozens of Jerusalem's Lot residents, each with enough separation that the slow disappearance of them registers one by one.
King built this as a small-town novel that happens to have vampires in it, and the first half is almost entirely gossip, grudges, and people not quite noticing. Audio suits that patience — you sit in the town's ordinary business while it is quietly emptied. Seventeen and a half hours, and the dread accumulates rather than spikes.
One Audible credit gets the whole town. If you only know the story by reputation, McLarty's reading is the version that shows why it frightened people in 1975.
