Scott Brick, one of the most prolific voices in audiobooks, gets two very different registers to work here. He reads Daniel Burnham's fair-building chapters with brisk, professional urgency, then drops into something quieter and more controlled for H. H. Holmes, letting the charm operate without ever tipping into melodrama. The alternation that makes the book unsettling on the page gets sharper in his hands, because you hear the tonal shift before you consciously register it.
At nearly fifteen hours, it's built for a long haul: a cross-country flight, a week of commutes, or a run of evening walks where you want history that moves like a thriller. Brick's pacing keeps the slower committee-meeting chapters from ever fully stalling.
