John Corey talks constantly, and that is the series. He is a wounded NYPD detective convalescing on Long Island who cannot stop making jokes at the wrong moment, and Scott Brick plays the wisecracks dry rather than broad, so Corey stays a competent investigator instead of becoming a comic.
Twenty hours is a long book, and DeMille fills it with the sort of material that rewards a narrator: virology lab politics, colonial land grants, ferry schedules, local grudges. Brick keeps the exposition moving and lets the reader work out, roughly when Corey does, that the killer has been waiting a very long time for something specific.
