Stephen King moves a doctor's family into a house on a fast Maine highway and puts a burial ground behind it that gives back whatever you bury there. Pet Sematary is his bleakest novel, the one he finished and shelved because he thought it went too far, and the reputation is deserved.
Why the audiobook wins
Michael C. Hall reading King's bleakest novel is inspired casting. Hall spent years playing a man narrating his own worst impulses in a calm, reasonable voice, and that is precisely what Louis Creed does — talking himself step by step into something he knows better than to do.
The book's horror is a grief argument rather than a monster, and Hall refuses to signal it. He stays level through the parts where a lesser reading would push, which leaves the reader alone with the logic. Just under sixteen hours, and it is genuinely hard to listen to at night.
One Audible credit gets the novel King himself was reluctant to publish, read by the actor best suited to its particular calm.
