Sean Runnette reads it straight, no wink, which is exactly right for a novel whose premise is a seventy-foot shark coming up out of the Mariana Trench. Play it for laughs and the tension dies; play it as a Navy incident report and the surfacing actually works.
Alten spends real time seven miles down before anything happens, in the dark, at pressure, with Jonas Taylor's ruined career riding on what he thinks he saw. Ten and a half hours of that in your ears, ideally not while swimming.
