J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit follows Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who wants nothing more than a quiet life, as he's dragged out his front door and onto a road that leads to a dragon's treasure. It's a cozy-then-perilous quest fantasy, funny and frightening by turns, and surprisingly tender about what courage actually costs an ordinary person.
Why the audiobook wins
Rob Inglis doesn't just read The Hobbit, he performs it, singing the dwarves' songs in full and giving Gollum, Smaug, and Bilbo each a voice so distinct you could pick them out blind. Inglis narrated the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy as well, and that depth of familiarity with Tolkien's world shows in every choice here, from the cadence of the riddle game to the weight he gives Bilbo's small, real moments of courage.
This is the kind of audiobook worth putting on for a whole household, the story Tolkien more or less intended to be read aloud in the first place. It's a natural fit for a long road trip or bedtime chapters with a kid who's ready for dragons.
Inglis's performance has been the standard Hobbit narration for a generation of listeners for a reason. At around eleven hours, it's a warm, funny, occasionally frightening journey there and back again, and one credit is all it costs to go.
