Legendborn asks a lot of its narrator: a grieving Black teenager's voice has to carry both a modern mystery about her mother's death and a centuries-old Arthurian secret society without either thread swallowing the other. Joniece Abbott-Pratt, a 2021 Audie Award finalist in the Fantasy category for her narration of Raybearer, keeps Bree Matthews sharp-tongued and guarded even as the supernatural plot escalates around her, so the anger never gets smoothed into generic YA heroism.
What makes this one worth hearing rather than reading is how Abbott-Pratt handles the collision of registers, contemporary Southern grief butting up against knights and legendborn magic, without ever making the tonal whiplash feel like a genre mashup. At nearly nineteen hours, it's a long, immersive commitment, well suited to a series of commutes or a long drive where you can let Bree's dual quest build.
