Why the audiobook wins
Final Girls is about a woman who has told her survival story so many times it has stopped being memory, and Erin Bennett narrates Quincy as someone reciting a version she has rehearsed. That is a performance choice you cannot make on the page, and it is doing the book's real work from the first chapter.
Hillary Huber takes the other register, and the two-voice structure keeps the flashbacks to Pine Cottage separate from the present-day mess in a way the print edition handles with section headings. Sager is playing with slasher conventions turned inward, and slasher conventions are audio conventions: the whole genre was built on what you can hear and cannot see.
