She modulates between Scarlett's anxious, list-making caution and the seductive theatrical hush of Master Legend's game with real control, so you feel the story's central trick working on you even as you brace for it.
That's the hook: this is a book about not knowing what's real, and hearing it read aloud recreates the disorientation on purpose. Soler's pacing through the riddles and set pieces keeps you guessing scene to scene rather than page to page, which suits a plot that wants to be experienced breathlessly, in one sitting, ideally after dark.
