The pacing at the very start, before Harry reaches Hogwarts, moves fast enough that some of the emotional groundwork with the Dursleys gets compressed into shorthand cruelty rather than fully dramatized scenes, and readers coming to it as adults sometimes notice how thin that opening stretch is compared to the richness of everything after. But once the castle doors open, the book knows exactly what it's doing. I still think about the first time Harry sees the Great Hall, ceiling enchanted to look like the sky outside, and realizes the ordinary rules he'd spent his whole life memorizing simply don't apply here anymore.
