Why the audiobook wins
Vox is narrated by a woman rationed to a hundred words a day, which makes audio close to the right format by accident. Julia Whelan reads Jean McClellan's interior voice at full speed, unrestricted and furious, then plays her spoken words clipped and counted. Hearing those two registers side by side is the whole argument of the book, delivered without a word of explanation.
Whelan also has to voice Sonia, six years old, learning that saying nothing wins prizes. It is the hardest thing in the novel and she refuses to oversell it, which is why it works.
Most audiobook listeners already know this voice: Whelan reads Educated, Gone Girl and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. Nine hours and twenty-seven minutes, short for a dystopia and faster than that in practice. One Audible credit.
