The Tattooist of Auschwitz Audiobook— narrated by Richard Armitage

7 hr 25 min

Based on the real testimony of Auschwitz survivor Lale Sokolov, Heather Morris's novel follows the man forced to tattoo prisoner numbers onto fellow inmates, and the woman he falls for in the middle of the camp's daily horror.

Why the audiobook wins

Richard Armitage reads The Tattooist of Auschwitz, and the casting does most of the work. Armitage has one of the more recognizable voices in audio, low and deliberate, and he uses none of it for effect here. Lale's job is to tattoo numbers onto the arms of people arriving at Auschwitz, and Armitage delivers that plainly, without a single reach for the emotion already in the material.

That restraint is why the recording works. Morris built the novel from Lale Sokolov's own testimony, and testimony read aloud is closer to what it originally was than testimony on a page. When Lale meets Gita in the queue, Armitage does not swell. He just keeps going, the way the days did.

Seven and a half hours, which is short for the weight of it, and most people finish in two sittings because stopping feels wrong. One Audible credit covers the recording.
