He is a widowed, bad-tempered bookseller whose warmth has to arrive slowly or it means nothing, and a reader who rushed him would flatten the book into sentiment inside an hour.
The structure suits listening too. Every chapter opens with A.J.'s notes on a short story, written for his daughter, and Brick reads those in a more private register than the narration around them.
