Tia Williams turns that runaway premise into a warm, funny, properly steamy contemporary romance, and The Missed Connection is smart enough to make the detective the real story.
Why the audiobook wins
Khaya Fraites narrates the whole novel solo, which is the right call for a book that is essentially one long conversation with interruptions. Tia Williams writes talk: overlapping dinner-party talk, shop talk between people who are good at their jobs, two exes flirting through a case file. One voice carrying all of it keeps the rhythm of the banter intact rather than splitting it between a cast.
Sasha's comedy depends on timing more than on any line you could pull out and quote, so this is a book that gains from being spoken. Her deflections read as deflections when you can hear the beat where she changes the subject, and the sex scenes, which are explicit and unhurried, play as conversation rather than choreography. Nine hours and thirteen minutes is a week of commutes or one very long drive.
If Seven Days in June left you wanting more of this voice, the recording is the closest thing to hearing Williams read a room out loud. One Audible credit covers the whole international manhunt, and the romance it is hiding.
