Laura Dave's suspense novel runs on a teenager's half-remembered childhood and a stepmother who refuses to leave.
Why the audiobook wins
Rebecca Lowman reads The Last Thing He Told Me the way Hannah Hall thinks: fast, practical, and one step away from a panic she refuses to show. It suits a novel built out of three-page chapters and a two-word instruction. Owen is gone, the note says protect her, and Lowman never lets Hannah sound heroic about any of it.
The best stretch is Austin. Hannah and a sixteen-year-old who cannot stand her walk a strange city trying to match a child's fragment of memory to a real building, and in audio those scenes play as two people learning each other's rhythm in real time. Lowman keeps Bailey prickly throughout. No softening, no sudden warmth. When the shift finally comes it is small enough to believe.
About nine hours, roughly the length of the frantic week the story covers. If the Apple TV+ series brought you here, the novel gives you Hannah's interior case for a choice the screen version has to stage from the outside. One Audible credit.
