The House in the Cerulean Sea Audiobook by TJ Klune— narrated by Daniel Henning
TJ Klune's The House in the Cerulean Sea sends a rule-following government caseworker to an island orphanage housing six magical children, one of them the son of the Devil, and turns the inspection into a long argument for hope. A contemporary fantasy about found family, second chances, and how much of a life a person can hand over to a job.
Why the audiobook wins
Daniel Henning narrates The House in the Cerulean Sea across a little over twelve hours, and the casting does something the page cannot. The book runs on six magical children with six very different registers, from a gnome who negotiates with a shovel in her hand to a six-year-old who introduces himself as the son of Satan. Henning gives each of them a voice you can tell apart inside two words. Over twelve hours with a full house of characters, that matters more than any other single choice in the production.
Linus Baker is the harder job and the one Henning gets right. Linus is a middle-aged government caseworker who has flattened himself into politeness, and the performance keeps him careful and faintly stiff for hours before letting any warmth through. By the time he finally raises his voice, you have waited long enough that the moment hits harder than it does in print.
Twelve hours is a long stretch to spend with a comfort read, and this one holds the whole way. It is the recording people put on to get through a bad week, and it costs a single Audible credit.
