The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable Audiobook— narrated by Joe Ochman
Nassim Nicholas Taleb argues that the events which reshape markets and lives are exactly the ones no model contained. The Black Swan makes that case through a turkey, a Las Vegas casino, and a long quarrel with the bell curve. Digressive, combative, and hard to shake once you have read it.
Why the audiobook wins
Joe Ochman has the harder job here than most nonfiction narrators: Taleb writes in digressions, jokes, grudges, and direct addresses to the reader, and a flat reading would flatten the personality that is half the book. Ochman keeps the contrarian edge without turning it into a performance of arrogance.
Sixteen hours across a book that circles its argument rather than marching through it — which suits repeat listening. The Fooled by Randomness material, the Mediocristan and Extremistan distinction, the attacks on forecasting all recur, and hearing them recur is closer to how the book means to work.
One Audible credit gets the whole argument. Taleb is easier to take in audio than on the page, where the footnotes and asides interrupt more than they do aloud.
