Why the audiobook wins
Camille carves words into her own skin, and Flynn's debut keeps naming them, one after another, as they surface. On the page they are printed in italics. Read aloud by Ann Marie Lee, they arrive as a voice interrupting itself, which is much closer to what Flynn is describing.
Lee narrates Camille as tired rather than damaged, which is the right call. Sharp Objects works because Camille is a functioning reporter doing a job in the town that made her, and a performance that leaned into fragility would give the ending away hours early. Instead the dread accumulates in the mother, the sister and the house, and you notice it about the same time Camille lets herself.
