Why the audiobook wins
Scythe alternates: third-person chapters following two teenage apprentices, then a page or two lifted straight out of a scythe's private journal. On the page you get a typographic cue and move on. Greg Tremblay has to sell the switch with nothing but register, and he does it by dropping into something drier and more self-satisfied for the journals, so you can hear an institution talking to itself. That is where the book's moral argument lives, and the recording makes it the loudest thing in the room.
Tremblay also narrates the rest of the Arc of a Scythe trilogy, so the voices you learn in these ten and a half hours carry through Thunderhead and The Toll without a recasting to adjust to. If you came looking for the next series after The Hunger Games or Red Rising, this is the one that goes cold and philosophical instead of loud.
