Predictably Irrational Audiobook by Dan Ariely— narrated by Simon Jones

7 hr 22 min

Dan Ariely ran years of experiments on students, shoppers, and bar patrons to show that the ways we misjudge value are systematic enough to predict in advance. Predictably Irrational is the tour: decoy pricing, the pull of free, the moment a favor curdles into a transaction. Short chapters, real studies, a light touch with the economics.

Why the audiobook wins

Simon Jones reads behavioral economics the way it should be read: lightly, with the timing of someone who finds the experiments funny. Ariely's studies — the free chocolate, the anchoring, the honor-code arithmetic — are built on small human absurdities, and Jones delivers the setups without telegraphing the punchline.

Seven and a half hours makes this one of the shortest big-idea books in the section, easily a week of commutes or a couple of long walks. The chapters are self-contained experiments, so putting it down mid-book costs you nothing.

One Audible credit gets the whole thing. It is a good entry point to the field, and the experiments are far more memorable heard than skimmed.
