Why the audiobook wins
My Friends spends its first third refusing to explain how its two timelines connect, and that is where a narrator earns her fee. Marin Ireland carries the confusion for you. She holds one steady tone across the cuts between Louisa in the present and four teenagers on a pier twenty-five years back, so the disorientation stays interesting instead of turning into work.
Backman writes teenagers who talk over each other, and Ireland keeps them separate without performing voices at anybody. The humor stays dry. The damage underneath stays audible without being pressed on.
Ireland also reads Backman's Beartown, and the same restraint is why she suits him. He back-loads his big emotional beats, so a narrator who has been holding something in reserve for twelve hours has somewhere left to go. Thirteen hours and twenty-two minutes. One Audible credit.
