Dan Simmons sends seven pilgrims across a galactic war to a valley of tombs that travel backward through time, and lets each of them tell their story on the way. Hyperion is six novellas braided into one science fiction novel, and at least two of them are as good as the genre has ever gotten.
Why the audiobook wins
Hyperion is seven pilgrims taking turns, six of whom get to tell their story, so a full-cast recording is not decoration here. It is the structure. Each tale arrives in a different genre, hardboiled detective in one, battlefield confession in another, a filthy comic monologue in a third, and handing each pilgrim a separate voice makes those seams audible instead of something you notice on reflection afterward.
The recording runs a little under twenty-one hours, roughly a tale every three. That pacing does the novel a favor. On the page Hyperion can feel like six novellas queued behind a plot that barely moves. Heard one sitting at a time, it works the way Chaucer works, as strangers on a road taking turns while the destination gets closer.
