Half His Age Audiobook by Jennette McCurdy— narrated by Jennette McCurdy
In her first novel, Half His Age, Jennette McCurdy follows Waldo, a ravenous seventeen-year-old who fixes her want on a married creative writing teacher. It's a coming-of-age character study with teeth: funny, mortifying, and angry, for readers who want their literary fiction raw rather than tidy.
Why the audiobook wins
Jennette McCurdy reading her own fiction is the whole pitch. Waldo, the ravenous seventeen-year-old narrator of Half His Age, talks the way teenagers actually think when no adult is listening, fast, contradictory, mortifying, and McCurdy already proved with I'm Glad My Mom Died that she can hold a voice like that without flinching from it. On the page it's a bold performance; in her own mouth it's unmistakably lived-in.
This is a short, sharp listen, a little over four and a half hours, built for one sitting rather than a long commute. McCurdy doesn't let Waldo soften into someone easier to root for, and hearing that refusal in her own cadence, funny and cruel and tender within the same breath, makes the discomfort land harder than it would in silent prose.
McCurdy's transition from memoirist to novelist is still new enough that every choice she makes on the page, and now in the booth, is worth paying attention to. A single credit covers the whole uneasy ride.
