Four Seasons in Rome Audiobook by Anthony Doerr— narrated by Anthony Doerr

On Twins, Insomnia, and the Biggest Funeral in the History of the World

Anthony Doerr spends a Rome Prize year chasing Pliny, Keats, and a dying pope through the city's back alleys while his newborn twins scream through the night, and the result is a memoir about attention as much as about Italy.

Why the audiobook wins

Anthony Doerr reads Four Seasons in Rome himself, which turns a book about paying attention into a demonstration of it. The prose is image-dense enough that a narrator racing through it would flatten it. Doerr gives his own sentences room, and the Roman details he spent a year collecting arrive one at a time instead of in a rush.

It also makes the exhaustion honest. This is a memoir written by a man with newborn twins who is not sleeping, and hearing the author say so in his own voice lands differently from reading it on the page. The comedy of the insomnia and the awe at the city come out of the same mouth, which is the book's whole argument.

If you came to Doerr through All the Light We Cannot See, this is where the attention in that novel was trained. One Audible credit covers the recording.
