Why the audiobook wins
Carolyn McCormick narrates the biologist's account in a flat, controlled register that turns out to be the perfect match for VanderMeer's prose, a voice trained to observe rather than react, which makes the moments it does react to land like a jolt. Area X is a place where language itself starts to misbehave, and McCormick's steady, almost clinical delivery makes the creeping wrongness that much more unsettling.
This is a short novel that rewards total immersion, closer to two hundred pages of dread than plot, and audio is arguably the ideal format for it: no page to glance ahead on, just McCormick's voice pulling you deeper into the tower, the tunnel, whatever it actually is. A good choice for a night when you want to be quietly unsettled rather than jump-scared.
VanderMeer's Nebula-winning opener trades answers for atmosphere, and McCormick's narration never rushes to explain what the book itself refuses to. A brief, hypnotic listen, one credit, and a book that's hard to shake.
