Alchemised spends long stretches in interrogation and suppressed memory, where the tension lives entirely in what a character is not saying, and Maarleveld reads the withholding rather than the words. Her High Reeve is cold without tipping into a caricature of cold, which keeps the power imbalance as uncomfortable as the book intends it to be.
At thirty-six hours this is one of the longest listens in the genre, and worth planning for: a commute-and-dishes companion for a month rather than a weekend.
